How much does SEO cost in 2026? Retainers, hourly and project prices

SEO costs most businesses between $500 and $5,000 a month in 2026, with the average retainer close to $3,000. That is the overlap of the two largest public pricing surveys: Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers and found an average retainer of $2,917 a month, and SE Ranking surveyed 260 agencies and found that 64% charge less than $1,000. Both are true at once, because a few expensive retainers pull the average far above what the typical provider charges.
This page puts the two surveys side by side, translates the bands into what you actually get, and compares them with the cost of doing SEO in-house using federal wage data.
SEO pricing at a glance
| Pricing model | Typical range | Average | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $500–$5,000 (63% of businesses) | $2,917 / month | Ahrefs, 439 providers |
| Agency retainer | most common: $500–$1,000 | $3,209 / month | Ahrefs |
| Freelancer retainer | most common: $101–$500 | $1,349 / month | Ahrefs |
| Hourly rate | 47% charge $75–$200 | $111 / hour | Ahrefs |
| One-time project | most common: $2,501–$5,000 | agencies $9,508 / project | Ahrefs |
| Local SEO retainer | — | $1,557 / month | Ahrefs |
| AI-search (AIO) work | — | about $937 / month | SE Ranking |
Two caveats before you use any of these numbers. Both surveys are self-reported by providers, and both mix markets: Ahrefs found that 76% of India-based SEOs charge $1,000 a month or less, while 79.1% of US and Canadian providers charge at least $1,001. If you are buying in North America, read the averages, not the most common bands.
Why the average and the “typical” price are so far apart
SE Ranking’s distribution makes it clear: 30% of agencies charge under $500 a month and only 2% charge over $5,000. Ahrefs’ most popular retainer band is $501–$1,000 (20.4% of providers). Yet both surveys land on a mean near $3,000, because a minority of senior consultancies and larger agencies charge many times the floor. Ahrefs found consultancies average $3,250 a month and that agencies charge 138% more than freelancers.
Region matters as much as provider type. In SE Ranking’s data, 22% of US and Canadian agencies charge more than $2,000 a month, against 9% in Europe, and 40% of North American agencies bill over $125 an hour, against 6% of European ones.
Experience matters too. In Ahrefs’ data, providers with five to ten years of experience average $3,648 a month in retainers, against $1,541 for those with two years or less.
What each price band actually buys
Prices only make sense next to scope. This is how we read the bands, based on the hours each one can fund at the survey’s average hourly rate of about $111:
| Monthly budget | Hours it funds (≈ $111/h) | What that realistically covers |
|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | ≤ 4.5 | Monitoring, a report and a handful of on-page fixes. Rarely any new content. |
| $500–$1,000 | 4.5–9 | One focused deliverable a month: a page optimized, a short technical sprint, or local listings upkeep. |
| $1,000–$2,500 | 9–22 | A steady cadence: technical maintenance plus one or two substantial new or refreshed pages a month. |
| $2,500–$5,000 | 22–45 | A real program: strategy, content production, internal linking, digital PR outreach and measurement. |
| $5,000+ | 45+ | Senior strategy plus a production team, often including original research and AI-search work. |
If a quote promises “full-service SEO” in the under-$500 band, ask where the hours come from. Usually the answer is automation or a junior account manager working a checklist.
Is it cheaper to do SEO in-house?
Usually not, unless SEO is big enough to keep a person busy full time. We estimated the fully loaded cost of in-house hires from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median wage for market research analysts and marketing specialists was $78,760 in May 2025. Wages are 70% of private-industry employer compensation (June 2026), so the all-in cost of that hire is about $112,500 a year, or $9,376 a month: roughly three average agency retainers.
The in-house hire wins on context and speed once the work is continuous. The agency wins on breadth: one retainer buys a strategist, a technical SEO, a writer and a link builder, part-time. We break the full trade-off down, role by role, in in-house marketing team vs agency.
How to compare SEO quotes
Ask every provider for the same five things in writing:
- Deliverables per month. Pages written or refreshed, technical fixes shipped, outreach sent. “Ongoing optimization” is not a deliverable.
- Who does the work. Name and seniority of the strategist and of whoever writes and builds.
- The first 90 days. A real plan starts with an audit and a prioritized backlog. Our technical SEO audit is that first step as a fixed-scope project.
- How success is measured. Non-brand organic clicks and conversions first, rankings second, and increasingly whether AI answers cite you.
- Minimum term and exit terms. SEO compounds over months, so a three- to six-month minimum is normal. Anything longer deserves a reason.

FAQ
How much does SEO cost per month? Most providers charge between $500 and $5,000 a month. Ahrefs’ survey of 439 providers found an average retainer of $2,917, with agencies at $3,209 and freelancers at $1,349. SE Ranking found 64% of agencies charge under $1,000 a month.
How much does SEO cost per hour? Ahrefs found an average of $111 an hour, with 47% of providers charging between $75 and $200. In SE Ranking’s survey, 40% of US and Canadian agencies charge more than $125 an hour.
How much does a one-time SEO project cost? Ahrefs found the most common project fee is $2,501–$5,000, with agencies averaging about $9,500 per project. SE Ranking found about two-thirds of agencies charge $500–$2,000 for a one-off project.
Is cheap SEO worth it? It can be, if the scope is narrow and honest: a local business that needs its listings and a few pages maintained does not need a $5,000 program. It is not worth it when a low price is paired with promises of guaranteed rankings or a vague “full-service” scope.
How much does local SEO cost? Ahrefs found local SEO retainers average $1,557 a month, against $3,474 for providers that work with clients worldwide.
